Endoscopy

Advanced Medicine, Compassionate Care, Healthier Lives for All

What is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a medical procedure using a flexible tube with a light and camera (endoscope) to examine the interior of organs and body cavities. Gastrointestinal endoscopy includes upper GI endoscopy (examining esophagus, stomach, and duodenum) and colonoscopy (examining the colon and rectum). Endoscopy allows direct visualization of the digestive tract, enabling diagnosis of ulcers, inflammation, tumors, bleeding sources, and other abnormalities. It can also be therapeutic, allowing removal of polyps, treatment of bleeding, and tissue sampling for biopsy. Endoscopy is safer and less invasive than traditional surgery for many diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

When is Endoscopy Needed?

Endoscopy is indicated for various symptoms and conditions:

  • Upper GI Symptoms: Persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, upper abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting
  • GI Bleeding: Black stools, bloody vomit, or unexplained anemia suggesting gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Screening: Colonoscopy for colon cancer screening in individuals over 45 or with family history
  • Chronic Diarrhea: Persistent diarrhea requiring investigation for inflammatory bowel disease
  • Suspected Ulcers: Evaluation for peptic ulcers or H. pylori infection
  • Polyp Surveillance: Follow-up colonoscopy after previous polyp removal
  • Swallowing Difficulties: Investigation of dysphagia or food getting stuck
  • Unexplained Weight Loss: Evaluation for gastrointestinal causes of weight loss
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Diagnosis and monitoring of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Biopsy Needs: Tissue sampling for suspected celiac disease, cancer, or other conditions
